Ananda Coomaraswamy Medal

The Executive Committee of the GSSL now calls for nominations for the award of the Ananda Coomaraswamy Medal for the year 2010. To honour the late Dr. Ananda Coomaraswamy for his pioneering contribution to the geological knowledge in Sri Lanka. The Society annually offers a medal to an earth scientist who has made outstanding contributions towards understanding the geology of Sri Lanka. The memorial oration and medal presentation will be held during the Annual General Meeting of the Society.
The General membership is requested to nominate eligible geoscientists, who have contributed to the advancement of Sri Lankan Geology. The nomination should be forwarded along with following information.
  • 1. Personal details
  • 2. Educational achievements with year of achievement
  • 3. Professional achievements with year of achievement
  • 4. Membership of professional institutions, both local and international
  • 5. Research publications in Local / Foreign international scientific journals
  • 6. Supervision of Research Projects / Academic theses etc
  • 7. Awards, Medals and other relevant honors received with the year of receipt
  • 8. Relevant contribution to the national development
  • 9. Relevant contribution to the industry / trade
  • 10. Contribution towards education, training and guiding geoscientists
  • 11. Reviewing / editing of relevant scientific articles / research publications / books, etc.
  • 12. Representation of community of geoscientists / of profession relevant to geo-science / trade relevant geo-science in Local / International forums, commissions and panels
  • 13. Contribution made towards the benefit of the community of the geoscientists
  • 14. Any other relevant information, which the member who nominates feels that those will be in benefit of the nominee in the process of evaluation of eligibility
It should be noted the prime criterion of eligibility of a nominee is “CONTRIBUTION TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF SRI LANKAN GEOLOGY”. However, the above subject areas could be used as a guideline for the information to be provided. The member, who nominates a candidate, should obtain the requested information of his / her nominee and forward it to the Secretary, GSSL with an undertaking that, those information provided by him / her are true and correct.

The closing date for the nomination is 15th September, 2010.

GSSL Poster Competition

The Geological Society of Sri Lanka (GSSL) has launched a Poster Design Competition among geology community/ undergraduates in Earth Sciences. The objective of the competition is to design the best posters to create awareness in O/L and A/L students on topics related to Geology of Sri Lanka. e.g. Rocks of Sri Lanka, Mineral Resources of Sri Lanka, Geology and Natural Disasters of Sri Lanka, or any other relevant topic of your choice.

The posters 4’X3’ (inclusive of 1” margin) in size should be illustrated with high quality field/laboratory photographs and sketches/diagrams etc. and clear and brief descriptions of their content, with proof of originality of the illustrations.

The Executive Committee of the GSSL has decided to award cash prizes for the best three posters. 1st Prize (Rs. 5000/=), 2nd Prize (Rs. 3000/=), 3rd Prize (Rs. 2000/=). Certificates for Best Creative Posters will be awarded to ten competitors. Dead-line for the competition – 30th June 2010.

Submit electronic copies of your poster/s saved on a CD to the: Editors/GSSL, Dept. of Geology, Univ. of Peradeniya, Peradeniya.

AGM & Technical Sessions 2009

26th Annual Sessions

26th Annual General Meeting and the Technical Sessions of GSSL was held on Friday, 26th of February 2010 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI), Colombo. More than 200 members and well-wishers were attend the event and Prof. Kapila Gunasekera, Vice Chancellor, Vocational Technology University, Ratmalana was the Chief Guest of the Event. Prof. Mahinda Rupasinghe, Vice Chancellor, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka participated the event as the Guest of Honor. Professor C.B. Dissanayake, Director, IFS delivered the Keynote Address.

Ananda Commaraswamy Oration

Prestigious Ananda Coomaraswamy Medal for the Year 2001 was awarded to Mr. Dayantha Priyalal Dias for his significant contribution to improve the Sri Lankan Geology particularly for his contribution to the National Development through private sector enterprises. Mr. Dias delivered the Ananda Coomaraswamy Memorial Oration on "Geotechnical drilling in inland water bodies and off shore for national development projects".

Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting was held after the Inauguration Ceremony and a new Executive Committee were elected for the Year 2010.

Technical Sessions

The Technical Sessions was held under the theme “Geology for National Development”, while placing special emphasis on the theme, other topics of Geology was also presented. Eleven papers  were presented at the event and Prof Atula Senaratne carried out the summing up.

GSSL Annual Get-together and the Dinner

The GSSL Annual Get-together and the Dinner was held at Lavinia Breeze, Mt. Lavinia and nearly 50 members and their families were participated in this occasion.

INAUGURAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE IGSL

Inaugural General Meeting of the IGSL was held on 06th November 2009 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI),
Independent Square, Colombo 7. More than 50 eligible members of the IGSL were present at the event and the first council for the Instate were elected. Await for more details!
