GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF SRI LANKA (GSSL)

Call for Papers - Journal of Geological Society of Sri Lanka -Volume 15 (Prof. Kapila Dahanayake Felicitation Volume)                                                                                                                                                 The Editors are planned to publish Volume 15 of the Journal of the Geological Society of Sri Lanka (JGSSL) before end of year 2012. The editors have, with the approval of the Executive Committee, decided to invite Manuscripts from the national and international geologists, who have work on Sri Lankan Geology to felicitate the Eminent Geologist Prof. Kapila Dahanayake. Those who wish to send manuscripts are requested to submit either hard copy of the soft copies, prepared according to JGSSL format (see the guidelines) on or before 30th June 2012 to the  editors.                                                                                                                                                                                   Dr. G.W.A.  Six-a-Side Cricket Tournament Organized by GSSL  Executive Committee of GSSL has decided to organize six-a-side softball cricket tournament among the institutional members of GSSL on 28th April 2012 at the hockey ground of the University of Peradeniya from 1.00 pm onwards. GSSL Members are requested to represent their respective Institutions for the participation. The following Institutions have already agreed to represent the 6 member team for the tournament.                                                                                                                                                                           1. Geological Survey & Mines Bureau;  2. Depatment of Geology; 3. Other National Universities; 4. Water Supply and Drainage Board; 5. Water Resources Board6. Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau; 7. National Building Research Organisation; 8. Rest of the Institutions; 9. Student Members.                                                                                                                                                                                Executive Committee of GSSL has also decided to organize tournament dinner from 6.30 pm onwards at the PGIA Guest house in the same day.  Please let the organizers know in advance if you need accomodation. Sri Lankan Earth Science Olympiad Competition - 2012

Third Sri Lankan Earth Science Olympiad Competition (SLESOC) will be organized jointly by Geological Society of Sri Lanka (GSSL) in collaboration with Department of Geology, University of Peradeniya. The competition will be open to Sri Lankan school students under 18 years by 1st October, 2012 and those who obtained their G. C. E. (O/L) results by the application deadline. The competition test will be arranged during May, 2012. Best four students will be selected to be participated at the 6th International Earth Science Olympiad competition will be held in Argentina, during October 2012 (subject to availability of funds). Please submit your applications on or before 10th April 2012.

Professor Kapila Dahanayake awarded  DSc honoris causa by the University of Ruhuna !

  

Professor Kapila Dahanayake, Professor Emeritus (Geology), University of
Peradeniya was conferred the degree of D.Sc. honoris causa  at the recent
convocation of the University of Ruhuna held on 30th March 2012 at
Wellamadama, Matara.The award was made in recognition of his significant
contribution towards establishing the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine
Sciences and Technology at the University of Ruhuna in his capacity as the
chairman of a cabinet appointed committee of geologists, biologists and
sociologists.and in acknowledgement of his invaluable expertise on geology
and advancement of scholarship on geology nationally and internationally..
This was also the occasion of the first passing out of graduates of the
Faculty of Fisheries, and Marine Sciences and Technology established in 2006.
