28thAnnual General Meeting
The Executive Committee of the Geological Society of Sri Lanka (GSSL) is pleased to invite you to the 28th Annual General Meeting and the Technical Sessions of GSSL which will be held on Friday, 24th February 2012 at the auditorium of the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI), No. 100, Independence Square, Colombo 07 from 8.00 a.m. onwards. Dr. Ananda Mallawatantri Assistant Resident Representative, Team Leader of Environment, Energy and Disaster Risk Management, UNDP will grace this occasion as the Chief Guest. The theme of the Technical Sessions is “Building on Safe Land” and Eng. Nihal Rupasinghe, Chairman, Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB) will participate as the Keynote Speaker.
Registration
All members are requested to register for the Day’s events by paying the registration fee of Rs. 1000/- (for ordinary/life/associate members) and Rs.500/- for student members. Non members can also participate in the Inauguration Ceremony and the Technical Sessions by paying the registration fee of Rs. 1250/-. Registration should be done before the commencement of the Inauguration Ceremony. All registered participants will be provided with lunch, snacks/tea, Abstract Volume and the stationery pack in a conference bag. Members are kindly requested to pay the annual membership fees and arrears (if any) at the registration desk.
Technical Sessions
While placing special emphasis on the theme “Building on Safe Land” in Technical Session I, two other parallel Sessions on aspects of Ground Water/ Environmental Geology and Geology and Geo-Chemistry have also been planned. Authors making presentations are kindly requested to prepare the same in Microsoft Power Point. The presentations will be received by the audio visual technician at the Registration Desk. The detailed programme of the Technical Sessions has been already e-mailed to the authors of Abstracts by the Editors and the others will receive it at the time of registration
Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting will be held after the Tea Break following the technical sessions. All members are expected to attend the AGM to elect office-bearers for 2012 and to forward constructive proposals for the advancement of the GSSL. Therefore, your participation will be vital at the AGM to discuss matters in this regard.
Sri Lanka Won a Bronze Medal
Sri Lankan student won a bronze medal in 6th International Earth Science Olympiad Competition held in Modena, Italy in last September. Await for more details!
Earth and the Environment- Sinhala Book

A Sinhala book published by the GSSL, titled Earth and the Environment- a geological Introduction, authored by Profs. Rohana Chandrajith and C.B. Dissanayake were launched officially in a grand ceremony held on 23rd January 2011 at Institute of Fundamental Studies, Kandy. Minister of Higher Education, Hon. Mr. S.B. Dissanayake grace the occasion as the Chief Guest. The book is now available for sell at the cost of Rs 350/-.
