25th year of getting Doctor of Science Degree

GSSL congratulate Prof. C.B. Dissanayake in celebrating the 25th year of getting Doctor of Science Degree from Oxford University- D.cbd photoSc ( the highest degree for science, above the Ph.D, in 1991) . He is the only Sri Lankan to hold this degree from Oxford in any subject and also honored to become the second geologist after the great Dr. Ananda Coomaraswamy, who obtained a D.Sc degree in Geology from London University.

While congratulating, the GSSL notes this as an encouragement to the Sri Lankan younger geologists!

 Workshop on Earth Science for Schools

The annual workshop on Earth Science for school teachers from the Central Province. This year, the programme will be conducted in three stages, covering three districts of the Central Province (Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya). The programme will be conducted at the Department of Geology, University of Peradeniya in the months of June, July and August, 2016.

The first programme has been scheduled to conduct on 03rd and 04th June, 2016.

Mr. Pathmakumara Jayasingha–Recent Ph.D. 

3Mr. Pathmakumara Jayasingha, a member of GSSL, has got his Ph.D. at Postgraduate Institute of Science, University of Peradeniya on “Evolution and vulnerability of quaternary sandy aquifer systems in northwestern coastal area of Sri Lanka, with special reference to Kalpitiya peninsula “. His Supervisors are Prof. HMTGA Pitawala and Dr.HA Dharmagunawardhana.  Four international papers were published based on his thesis.

Mr. Prasanga Mantilaka– Recent Ph.D. 

4Mr. Prasanga Mantilaka, a member of GSSL, has got his Ph.D. at Postgraduate Institute of Science, University of Peradeniya titled on “Nanomaterials from Impure Marbles: Synthesis, Characterization and Properties” under the supervision of Prof. H.MT.G.A. Pitawala, Prof. R.M.G. Rajapakse and Dr. D.GG.P. Karunaratne. His project focuses on synthesis of nanomaterials for industrial and medical applications using Sri Lankan impure marbles. He has filed 6 Patent Applications in order to industrialize research outcomes of the project and  have published 7 papers in international indexed Journals including Powder Technology, Electrochimica Acta, Advanced Powder Technology, Materials Science and Engineering C, Colloids and Surfaces A, Journal of Crystal Growth and Journal of National Science Foundation.

AC Medal Winner 2014

3Mr. L.R.K. Perera, a life member and a former president of the GSSL and Senior Lecturer at Department of Geology of University of Peradeniya, was awarded the prestigious Ananda Coomarswamy Medal for the year 2014 for his outstanding contribution towards Sri Lankan Geology. The award ceremony and the memorial oration was held on  22nd August 2015 at the PW Vithanage Lecture theater of the  University of Peradeniya  and the recipient delivered his oration  on ‘Isochron translation, mantle mapping and Sri Lankan model ages’.

Ananda Coomaraswamy was intensely engaged in research on the Geology of Sri Lanka from 1903 to 1906 and he was appointed as the first Director of the Mineralogical Survey of Ceylon.


P.G. Cooray Medal Winner 2014

Miss. Nad11017871_374560_184230336_oeesha Madugalla was awarded the P.G. Cooray medal for year 2014 and  a cash award of  Rs 50,000  ‘In memory of Gerald and Joan Cooray’, presented by their daughter and grandson, Shantini Ann and Jamie.

Dbernard pramer. Bernard Prame, a life member and a former president of the GSSL, was appointed as the new Director General of the GSMB. He is a senior member of the GSSL and was the 2013 Ananda Coomaraswamy  Medal recipient.

Assistant General Manager at NWS&DB–New Appointment

Mr. Mahinda Premathilaka was appointed as an Assistant General Manager of the Ground Water Section of the Water Supplies and Drainage Board.  This is the highest position that a geologist achieved in National Water Supplies and Drainage board.

 Third place in Biochar Research Publications

mc3Dr. Meththika Vitanage, a member of the GSSL (OM 111), has been ranked as the top third author from international scientific publications related to biochar research publications in 2014. This ranking has been done by the SCOPUS. In 2014, she has published 7 science citation indexed journal articles, which is next to the world first and second ranked authors who have published 9 and 8 articles respectively.
