 L.J.D. Fernando Memorial Medal for a “Distinguished Geologist”

This award is presented to a distinguished geologist/geoscientist in recognition of his/her outstanding contribution to the nation and to the profession. The recipient receives a medal of recognition.

 

 

 

Eligibility

  • Senior geologists/geoscientists who have worked for more than 20 years for the country and now on their retirement age (above 60 years of age) are eligible for this award.
  • Recipients of the prestigious Ananda Coomarswamy Medal are not eligible for this award.
  • Potential candidates should be identified and selected by the Executive Committee of the GSSL without calling applic
    ations or nominations.

Ananda Coomaraswamy Medal

(Established and awarded by the Geological Society of Sri Lanka since 1986)

The Ananda Coomaraswamy Memorial Medal- Awarded by the Geological Society of Sri Lanka to an eminent Geologist who has made an outstanding contribution towards the advancement of Sri Lankan Geology, to honour the late Dr. Ananda Coomaraswamy for his pioneering contribution to the geological knowledge in Sri Lanka. The recipient would deliver Ananda Coomaraswamy Memorial Oration during a special session organized by the GSSL.

Call for Nominations 2016


P.G. Cooray Medal and Cash Award 

To honour Prof. P.G. Cooray for his outstanding contribution to earth science, the geological society of Sri Lanka awards the P.G. Cooray Medal every year from 1995, to the most outstanding young Sri Lankan earth scientist. The nominee should be under 35 years of age at the time of nomination and the nomination should be accompanied by a copy of the article, thesis, book or patent on which the nomination is based. The thesis or publication could be based on work done in a foreign country or in Sri Lanka. The nomination may be made by the nominee himself/herself or by the Head and one other of the institution for which nominee works.  In addition to the medal, starting with 2015 the medal recipient would receive a cash award of  Rs 50,000  ‘In memory of Gerald and Joan Cooray’, presented by their daughter and grandson, Shantini Ann and Jamie.

P.W.Vitanage Memorial Scholarship

To honour Professor P.W.Vitanage, the founder of the Department of Geology, University of Peradeniya, for his contribution to Geosciences of Sri Lanka, every year the Geological Society of Sri Lanka awards the Prof. P.W. Vitanage memorial scholarship to an undergraduate student who are following the Special Degree Course in Geology. The student will be selected by the University of Peradeniya based on his/her performances at the 200 Series Level. The Society extents  its gratitude to members and well wishes whose generous contribution helped to establishment of the Prof. P.W. Vitanage Memorial Fund.

 Tissa Munasinghe Scholarship

The “Dr. Tissa Munasinghe Scholarship” of the GSSL awards annually to an undergraduate student who is following the 400 Series Course in Geology. The student will be selected by the University of Peradeniya based on his/her performances at the 100-300 Series Level and on the economic background. This scholarship is sponsored by Dr. Tissa Munasinghe, a well known Sri Lankan Geologist, now holding an appointment as a Professor at the Los Angeles Harbor College, Wilmington, USA. The Society extents its gratitude to Dr. Tissa Munasinghe and his family to establishment of a Scholarship Fund.

GSSL Alumni Scholarship

The GSSL Alumni Scholarship will be awarded soon to a undergratuate student who is following the 300 Series Course in Geology. The student will be selected by the University of Peradeniya based on his/her performances at the 100-200 Series Level and on the economic background. The Society extents its gratitude to members, whose generous contribution helped to establishment of the “GSSL Alumni Scholarship” Fund.
