DSCN0323

The Publication on Natural Resources of Sri Lanka: Conditions, Trends and Prospects is an upgraded and updated version of two previous publications; Natural Resources of Sri Lanka: Conditions and Trends, published in 1991 and Natural Resources of Sri Lanka 2000, published by the National Science Foundation in the year 2000.

Many developments have taken place in Sri Lanka since the last edition of the publication in terms of resource availability, potential for sustainable utilization of Natural Resources for economic development, new opportunities for investment, prospects for industry and expansion of tourism.  Hence the need for a substantial revision of the existing version has been given high priority consideration.

The Publication focuses mainly on the current conditions and status of Sri Lanka’s natural resources, especially in relation to factors affecting the resources in the context of their sustainable utilization for the above mentioned economic and development activities. The projections for the future development scenario, as well as challenges, threats and opportunities for nature conservation, are also be highlighted where necessary.

The key projection of the publication is dissemination of information for national development. The NSF launched the publication on 4th October, 2018 in parallel to commemoration of the Founder’s Day of the NSF. The Publication consists of the following 18 chapters written by well recognized nationally reputed experts in the relevant areas.

The 6th chapter is on “Mineral Resources and sustainable use”. It was co-authored by two life members of the GSSL; by Vidyajyothi Prof. C.B. Dissanayake as the principal author and Ms. Deepani Weerakoon as one of the other co-authors.
